Copenhagen // Denmark

For my birthday I decided to leave the everyday routine behind and treat myself with a trip to Copenhagen! I truly love the northern mentality, their aesthetic designs and the unsettled weather. heart

Denmark definitely isn’t a low priced country, but even tourists on a low budget can experience lots of lovely places in and around Copenhagen. Here’s what I’ve been up to …

WOODAH HOSTEL

Abel Cathrines Gade 1, 1654 København V

This cozy hostel is situated in the center of Copenhagen, near the central railway station. From there you can easily get around town by foot. I chose the Woodah Hostel because of its reasonable prices, its charming interior and also because they offer free yoga sessions on a daily basis! Yay for that! The bunk beds are made of wood and offer you more privacy than in most other hostels.

Besides, everyone I met at the hostel was really nice and calm, just as you want your fellow travelers to be like. smile

CHRISTIANIA

Bådsmandsstræde 43, 1407 København K

The alternative freetown Christiania is one of the most popular tourist attractions and definitely a must-see.
Probably best known for the green light district in Pusher Street, Christiania is an autonomous neighborhood in the township of Christianshavn. This commune is regulated by a special law which transfers parts of the supervision of the area from the municipality of Copenhagen to the state. Nowadays, around 1000 residents live in Christiania in their self-designed vanguard homes.

VISIT CARLSBERG

Gamle Carlsberg Vej 11, 1799 København V

While I was wandering around the streets looking for BOXLAND, I came across the Carlsberg Brewery visitor center by chance. For all those beer enthusiasts among you, I’m sure it’s interesting to find out, how the well-known Carlsberg beer is being made!

BOXLAND

Ny Carlsberg Vej 101, 1799 København V

Situated in Ny Carlsberg is an outstanding shopping and restaurant area called BOXLAND. On weekends there’s a flea market where people sell diverse goods in their container-boxes. Unfortunately it was all closed when I got there, but you can still relax at the beach-area or stroll around the streets and find curiosities in every corner.

DYREHAVSBAKKEN // Klampenborg

Dyrehavevej 62, 2930 Klampenborg

On day 3 I decided to go to Klampenborg, a small town about 10 kilometers north of Copenhagen. If you take the train, you’ll be there in just 20 minutes. Definitely worth it, because once you arrive at the train station, the first thing you’ll notice is: THE SEA! As I do live in a landlocked country, I always drool over the beach and salty, maritime air. So I had to stop there first before heading off to Bakken.

Bakken (short for Dyrehavsbakken) is surrounded by an enchanting forest, which might be a little scary at night, when you hear kids and, – to be fair – also adults screaming from the fair.

Bakken is free to enter for everyone – unlike the Tivoli in Copenhagen – and it’s the world’s oldest operating amusement park. Of course I had to take at least one ride and decided to take my chances with „Rutschebanen“, the oldest wooden rollercoaster in Bakken, opened in 1932. rolleyes Thankfully, I survived.

Here’s a video of what I’ve been through. Quite scary, innit? wink

CHRISTIANSBORG PALACE TOWER

Christiansborg, 1218 København K

I’m always grateful when tourist attractions are free to access, like the tower of Christiansborg Palace. With 106 meters it’s the highest tower in Copenhagen and it offers such a nice view of the city. There are even more towers around town, but most of the time you have to pay an entrance fee. One of the more interesting ones might be the Spire of the „Church of our Saviour“. Though it comes in quite handy if you are free from giddiness (which I am definitely not).

COPENHAGEN STREET FOOD

Papirøen, Trangravsvej 14, hal 7 & 8, 1436 København K

In Copenhagen’s harbour on Papirøen (Paper Island) you’ll find a street food market worth supporting. In the big, raw halls you’ll find lots of lovingly decorated trucks, where you can get delicious food and drinks from all around the world.
The concept is to offer tasty food from sustainable ingredients at affordable prices. „Genuine, honest and aesthetic“ is their motto.

I chose some delicious Thai food and enjoyed the wonderful view outside at the city’s waterfront while eating. smile

BOTANICAL GARDEN

Øster Farimagsgade 2B, 1353 København K

On my last day, before I had to catch my flight back home, I decided to go visit the Botanical Garden, which is open for the public. Since I stumbled across the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh by accident in 2009, I completely fell in love with these green areas in cities. You’ll definitely don’t want to miss out on this one, if you do enjoy quiet spots. I even got to see a cute little squirrel! Now, if that’s not enough to get you over there, …

>> IMPRESSIONS <<

During my stay I discovered some adorable small cafés, where I mostly filled my body with delicious Chai Latte. tongue

These two places are the ones I’d like to recommend to you, because I really liked the atmosphere there: Kaffebaren in Istedgade 40, 1650 København V and RUM in Sønder Boulevard 103, 1720 København V.

Furthermore, I went to see two incredibly beautiful concerts at the VEGA: Bonobo and SOHN, two of my favorite artists at the moment. If you haven’t heard of them yet, go listen to their songs right NOW! These concerts have been part of the Strøm festival, which is dedicated to electronic music.

So, when in doubt, if Copenhagen may be too expensive (or too windy) for you, I can assure you, that there are many affordable options available!

A really great resource, which will help you plan your stay in Copenhagen, is the official tourist website: www.visitcopenhagen.com
